Beacon Hill Village PRESENTS " Conversations With… Kevin Kenny of Wolf Hollow" ON MONDAY, June 6 at 5:30 PM.

Wolf Hollow is a State and Federally licensed 501c3 nonprofit gray wolf sanctuary and educational facility located in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Their mission is the preservation of the wolf in the wild through education and exposure. They host the public on Saturdays and Sunday for educational tours and presentations and they host schools for field trips throughout the week.

An incredibly socially intelligent animal, gray wolves' social bonding and care-giving behavior is considered second only to humans and a few other social primates. The gray wolf is also frequently referred to as an ecosystem manager or a keystone species. They are shown to have a positive impact on almost every level of their local ecosystems and have even been shown in certain cases to have positive impacts on ecosystems thousands of miles away from where they live. There is even growing data and recent studies that have shown in Wisconsin, one of the more wolf populated states, that they are saving WI’s residents $10.5 million annually through the prevention of deer-vehicle collisions.

Despite all this the gray wolf still may be one of the most embattled animals when it comes to its endangered species protections and public perception within the United States. Most recently there was a massive roll back of protections in early January 2021, which led to some significant impacts to wolf populations around the nation before a lawsuit was able to successfully restore gray wolf federal protections.

Wolf Hollow hopes that through their presentations and tours that they can help debunk much of the misinformation surrounding wolves and, with any luck, create some advocates for the protection of wolves in the wild.

Kevin Kenny is the Operations Manager for Wolf Hollow. Joining as a volunteer in 2013 as a volunteer, Kevin was hired on as Wolf Hollow’s first employee in 2018 after graduating from Salem State University with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and Environmental Science. Being the only full-time employee means that he is often dividing his time during the week between caring for WH's resident wolves, hosting schools for field trips, managing volunteers, and a host of other duties and responsibilities related to the running and growth of Wolf Hollow.

This virtual program is presented with support from Cambridge Trust as part of Beacon Hill Village’s Conversations With… series. Registration required online in advance here or by calling Beacon Hill Village at 617-723-9713. Registrants will receive the Zoom invitation information in advance of the program. Free and open to the public.
