Boston EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL: THE NEWBERRY CONSORT

Liza Malamut, Artistic Director
Ellen Hargis, Guest Director
5pm | Emmanuel Church, Boston

The Juan de Lienas Vespers
The life of Mexican composer Juan de Lienas is shrouded in mystery. What little we know of the Baroque master comes from envious remarks scrawled by others in the margins of his surviving manuscripts, masterpieces that are exhilaratingly original and technically demanding. Written for the Convento de la Encarnación in the center of Mexico City, this Vespers service has been painstakingly reconstructed and edited by Guest Director Ellen Hargis. The Newberry Consort  and Artistic Director Liza Malamut return to BEMF with an all-female ensemble of nine voices, two trombones, dulcian, viol, and organ to transport us to the 17th-century convent where this sumptuous music was first heard.
