Dear Beacon Hill Village Members,
Too often I am the bearer of sad news, but today I have good news to share!
On behalf of the Board, we are delighted to announce the election of three new directors. Marty Walz, who joined in September 2019, and Barbara Berkman and Allan Hodges who joined in January 2020. Each of our new directors brings a wealth of experience and skills, and passion for supporting and building Beacon Hill Village.
As the principal of Marty Walz and Associates, Marty provides executive level support to organizations of all sizes, and her work includes project management, strategic planning, fundraising, communications and advocacy, board development, and interim leadership roles. Prior to founding her own firm, Marty served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, leading the organization’s health care, education, and advocacy work. As a former State Representative, she represented the 8th Suffolk District for 8 years. Marty holds an M.P.A .from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, a J.D. from New York University School of Law, and a B.A. from Colgate University. Marty stated, “I am honored to join the board so I may help strengthen this innovative movement to redefine what it means to live well as we get older.”
Allan Hodges completed a 50-year career in urban planning and environmental impact analysis in 2014 when he retired. The last 34 years were with Parsons Brinckerhoff’s Boston office as Director of Planning. With that global engineering and planning firm he planned transportation infrastructure projects throughout the U.S., including the Big Dig in Boston for which he was Environmental Documentation Manager. Allan is active in community and professional groups in Boston and Newport, RI. He has a B. Sc. Degree in Community Development from Southern Illinois University and a Master in Urban Planning Degree from Michigan State University. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners of the American Planning Association. In reflecting on his election Allan said, “My wife and I wanted to join BHV once we learned about it but we didn’t think we needed it yet. However, Carol died in November 2018 and my life changed. I needed BHV and joined. I am overwhelmed by the warm welcome and the wonderful people I have met. And frankly, I am amazed at the variety of programs and services BHV provides, with a small staff and a member-driven organization. I hope I can contribute to its continued success.”
Barbara Berkman is a retired research professor at Boston College School of Social Work and the Rehr/Fizdale Professor Emerita at Columbia University School of Social Work. She has directed 23 federally and foundation supported research projects focused on issues in geriatrics and health care and is a former president of the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research. She has a DSW/PhD from Columbia University, a MA from the University of Chicago and a BA from the University of Michigan. She is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and of the Gerontological Society of America. Barbara stated, “I am honored to be joining the Board of Beacon Hill Village. As an academic whose main focus has been research in aging and health I have been aware of BHV since its inception and am a strong supporter of its mission. I hope that I will be able to help us in our continued efforts to address the challenges and opportunities that face those who choose to “age in place.”
BHV Board President, Doug Fitzsimmons, commented, “These splendid friends bring BHV a wealth of care for community and the commitment of our members to directing their own lives and creating their own futures”.
Welcome! I look forward to working with you all.
